Waste Audits and the 3Rs Hierarchy

Companies need to periodically re-evaluate their waste management and recycling practices as changes occur in the waste management industry. The practice of conducting regularly scheduled waste audits began in 1975 but it has only been in the last five years that the practice has been conducted extensively throughout North America and Europe.

In the early 90's, legislation and goverment reduction targets were introduced throughout the United States and Canada to address growing concerns regarding available landfill space. In response to these initiatives, Industry and Institutions began conducting regular waste audits to identify opportunities to reduce waste output from their facilities and to maximize recycling and reuse programs. From these practices, it was recognized that organizations needed to formulate policies and environmental management systems designed to account for the way a facility or a corporation deals with issues relating to environmental performance.

In the late 1990's, the International Standards Organization (ISO) developed and released its ISO 14000 - Environmental Management System (EMS). In many ways similar to ISO 9000, ISO 14000 is a set group of tasks, responsibilities and monitoring systems for registered members to adhere to in order to provide assurance to its stakeholders and customers that it maintains and updates an environmental management system to meet or surpass regulatory compliance requirements and other environmental issues. An EMS should also contain regularly scheduled waste assessments for both hazardous and non-hazardous solid and liquid waste streams.

Immacutec's Waste Asssessment Program

Immacutec has developed a waste assessment program that balances a company's waste reduction efforts and waste management budget against changing trends in the existing and developing material recovery industry in North America. In short, Immacutec works with its clients to improve their waste reduction performance in a cost-beneficial and environmentally sound manner. Immacutec waste assessments examine all factors impacting waste generation.

A detailed and innovative Waste Assessment Program that is properly designed to address a specific facility's waste generation trends will result in greater waste reduction and significant cost savings. We guarantee that our Waste Assessment Program will remove constraints imposed by a facility's waste management budget and allow for more extensive analyses of other waste and cost reduction programs. How does Immacutec's Waste Assessment Programs differ from other companies that conduct waste audits? We employ innovative and exhaustive assessment planning, co-ordination and sampling techniques.

Project managers have a minimum of 12 years environmental compliance experience. Each projects is individually evaluated and conducted according to a facility's goals, its corporate policies and international standards. (i.e. ISO 14000) A company's waste minimization and recovery performance can be benchmarked against other companies.

We develop systems to facilitate communication within organizations on issues relating to waste management programs, reduction achievements, costing and service providers. We keep our clients up-to-date with any changes to existing and developing end-markets for recyclable and reusable materials.
